Description
Foundational English language acquisition skills for non-native speakers. Introduces reading, writing, listening and speaking skills for everyday and academic use, with emphasis on alphabet, simple grammar, pronunciation, common vocabulary and present tenses, using contextual learning and goal-setting activities. Concepts are integrated with appropriate College and Career Readiness Standards Level A.

Core Topics

Core topics for this course are detailed in the College & Career Readiness Standards for English Language Arts/Literacy Level A. Successful students will achieve 80% competency in 80% of the core topics.

 

  1. Reading:
    1. Ask and answer questions about key details of a text.
    2. Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.
    3. Describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text.
    4. Ask and answer questions to help determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases in a text.
    5. Know and use various text features to locate key facts or information in a text.
    6. Use illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas.
    7. Identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text.
    8. Identify basic similarities in and differnces between two texts on the same topic.
    9. Demonstrate an understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds.
    10. Know and apply CCR Foundational Skills 3 Level A phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
    11. Read at CCR Foundational Skills 4 Level A with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
  2. Writing:
    1. Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
    2. Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details, temporal workds, and provide some closure.
    3. Develop and strengthen writing by responding to questions and suggestions from peers adding details as needed.
    4. Use a variety of difital tools to produce and publish writing including collaboration with peers.
    5. Participate in shared research and writing projects.
    6. Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
  3. Speaking and Listening:
    1. Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners in groups.
    2. Ask and answer questions to confurm understanding of oral text or information presented orally or through other media.
    3. Ask and answer questions to seek help, get information, or clarify.
    4. Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.
    5. Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly and in complete sentences when appropriate.
  4. Language:
    1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking as detailed in CCR Speaking and Listening Standard Anchor 1A.
    2. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing as detailed in CCR Speaking and Listening Standard Anchor 2A.
    3. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies as detailed in CCR Speaking and Listening Standard Anchor 4A.
    4. Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings as detailed in CCR Speaking and Listening Standard Anchor 5A.
    5. Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to.
