AGRI 161: Introduction to Plant Science

Describe how early plants were discovered and adapted to the modern forms of today, discuss the role of plants on the environment and economic impacts.

Use the binomial system for naming plants, describe and provide examples of two classes of spermatophytes. Name plants and crops used for food, fiber, beverage and oil.

Describe the anatomy of the primary root, stems and leaves. Discuss all vegetative parts and functions of the plant. Describe the function and parts of the plant cell, the basic chemical composition and major plant tissue types of the complex plant. Describe and identify the processes and compounds utilized during photosynthesis and respiration and discuss carbon metabolism.

Describe the differences between sexual and asexual plant reproduction and differentiate between self and cross fertilization. Discuss plant cell division, plant growth regions and the function and location of plant meristem tissue.

Discuss the coordination of vegetative growth, environmental factors and agricultural management practices affect plant growth and development.

Identify the steps of plant germination, describe the differences between annuals, biennials and perennials and discuss dormancy. List the effects temperature and light may have on plants and calculate growing degree days.

Describe how plants depend on soil, the role of water in plants, and name the essential plant nutrients and describe their role in plant growth.

Discuss the basic principles of heredity and genetics, how and why plants are improved and the environmental and ethical control and conflicts brought about by genetic and biotechnology research.

Describe how weeds reduce or alter yields, the symptoms of an unhealthy or stressed plant and the ways insects harm plants.

Discuss the evolution of the native grassland regions, the conservation and management of ecosystems and the cultural practices of growing forage crops.

Name ten different fruit, nut and vegetable food crops. Discuss the evolution of the production fruit and vegetable industries, changes in cultural practices and the future of these industries.

Describe the major career areas and give examples of occupational titles within plant science management. Identify the general tasks and duties required within the various fields of plant science management.

Identify the education and specialized training needs of the successful plant science employee. Prepare a collection of educational activities and experiences as evidence documenting your skills, abilities and interest in a Plant Science career.
