Survey of major subfields of linguistics including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, language acquisitions, and sociolinguistics.

Understand the connection between communications, brain development, and culture change.

Have a broad grasp of the basic subfields of linguistics.

Understand language acquisition (first and second).

Develop critical reasoning and thinking skills regarding language development.

Know the role language has played throughout human history.

Core Topics

Critical thinking, cultural/social change through language, phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, language acquisition and development.

The course text, selected/determined solely by the instructor, must be accurate, informative and written at an appropriate reading level for WVC students.

Week 1 Language (Human vs Animal) and Origin of Language Week 2 Phonetics, begin Phonology (prosody, theory, features and typology, rules) Week 3 Finish Phonology, Review, Test 1, begin Semantics (meaning in language, lexical semantics) Week 4 Begin Phonetics Week 5 Morphology (signs, classification of words and morphemes) Typology and Syntax Week 6 review for Test 2Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics, Language contact, Historical-Comparative Linguistics Week 7 History of English Week 8 Dialects of American English, Native American Languages, Ecological Linguistics Test 3 Week 9 Origin and Development of Writing (Alternatives to Alphabet) Week 10 Continue and finish Writing or Review for Final (Depends on quarter schedule)
