Description

Introduction to the elements and principles of two-dimensional design and composition. Includes study of planar structure, depth illusions, figure-ground relationships and color theory.

Course Learning Outcomes

Understand and effectively use principles of 2-dimensional design, including line, space (shape, mass, perspective, atmosphere), light & color, texture, balance, emphasis, scale, repetition, unity, and variety.

Analyze and apply the principles of 2-dimensional composition, including, balance, eye movement, focal point, planar modulation (grids), redistribution of color areas (topologies, sequential movements), and compositional organizations (shifting center, regrouping, symmetry, modular units).

Analyze and apply principles of depth illusion on the 2-dimensional plane, including overlapping (transparency, opacity), figure-ground relationships (continuity, adjacency, reversal), and figuration abstraction relationships.

Display developed studio skills of selecting and applying colors in precisely controlled shapes and planar locations.

Display perceptual judgment in composing paintings or other visual layouts.

Have a general understanding of the theories and application of composition and illusion in the history of art.

Have a general understanding of the perceptual psychology involved in depth illusions and figure-ground relationships.
