Comprehend dates, historical periods, civilizations, stylistic movements and terminology of modern art history.

Develop interpretive methods for understanding modern art, including analysis of the following characteristics of art:

<li>Function (magical, religious, funerary and political purposes)</li>
<li>Content (mythological, religious and historical subject matters and symbols)</li>
<li>Form (composition, color, proportion, illusion and perspective)</li>
<li>Materials and processes (physical characteristics and techniques of art and architecture)</li>
<li>Style and convention (unique attributes common to works of a given period or culture)</li>
</ul>

Show a general understanding of relationships between the visual arts and the larger cultural, intellectual and social environment within which it developed.

Apply analytical principles learned in lectures to an in-depth study and written interpretation of individually selected works of modern art.

Understand the information constructs and biases inherent in the way art history is delivered.
