Description

This course will focus on evidence-based care for patients with psychiatric/mental health disorders, including cultural, ethical and legal influences as well as wellness of individuals and families. Treatment modalities related to psychopathology will be explored. The nurse’s role in advocacy, care coordination, collaboration with the healthcare team, and therapeutic communication will be covered.

Differentiate common types of mental illnesses, as well as alterations in mood and cognition, encountered in acute care and community settings.

Identify priority interventions for patients that are suicidal

Identify barriers to care for patients with psychiatric illnesses, with an emphasis on the rural setting.

Describe common interventions (pharmacologic, counseling/therapies and nutritional) that support management of a patient with a mental health disorder.

Discuss the role that substance abuse plays as a comorbidity to mental health disorders.

Demonstrate therapeutic communication strategies with patients with maladaptive thoughts and behaviors.
