Description

Supervised work experience in a chemical dependency treatment agency approved by college faculty.

Grading Basis

Graded

Collaborate with staff members and observe experienced counselors at work.

Identify basic skills and tasks of counselor trainees.

Determine areas of strength and growth by reviewing necessary competencies and journaling.

Understand the responsibilities of a counselor trainee by observing in a counseling setting.

Introduction to national and state ethical standards and legal responsibilities of counselors, including familiarity with codes of ethics of related professions.
Understanding of the role, limitations and pivotal importance of personal integrity with ethical practice.
Identify key areas which lead chemical dependency counselors into ethical difficulties including confidentiality, mandatory reporting, personal relationships, counselor relapse, competence and limits, credential requirements, patient rights, mandatory drug testing, HIV/AIDS, special populations, financial exploitation, business issues and malpractice.
Understand specific ethical and legal issues as it relates to adolescents/minors.
