Description

Critically investigates the production and consumption of Chicano/a forms of culture/identity. Examines Chicano/a culture as a dynamic process, which includes theater, literature, poetry, art, film and music.

Course Learning Outcomes

Acquire a general understanding of the formation of Chicano/a identity, including how it is created and attributed within society.

Develop a deeper understanding of Chicano/a culture.

Identify and analyze the Chicano/a cultural experience in a socio-historical context.

Apply knowledge and experience to foster personal growth and better appreciate the diverse social world in which we live.

Interpret, through a variety of mediums, the socio-culture context and meaning of various forms of cultural manifestations, which can include theatre, literature, poetry, art, film, and music.

Demonstrate, through a variety of mediums, an ability to evaluate forms of cultural manifestations at both a literal and figurative level.

Express cultural awareness, sensitivity, and diversity.

Social construction of race.
Attributes imparted onto Chicano/as based on the social construction of racial hierarchy, such as:
1. Border as Identity.
2. Disease as Identity.
3. Farmworker as Identity.
4. “Illegal” (Undocumented/criminalization) as Identity.
Chicano/as formulating their own identity and culture as expressed through the Civil Rights Movement and beyond through the following:
1. Chicano/a Literature as culture.
2. Chicano/a Poetry as culture.
3. Chicano/a (Mexican) Art as culture.
4. Chicano/a Film as culture.
5. Chicano/a Music as culture.
