Description

Principles, processes and practices of interpersonal communication to appropriately and effectively communicate in given situations. Focus is on perception of self and others, including diversity, verbal and non-verbal cues, and strategies for understanding and improving interpersonal relationship dynamics.

  1. Interpersonal communication basics: communication models; interpersonal communication competence; concepts related to interpersonal communication as a uniquely human endeavor.
  2. The self and other: perception of self, self-concept, self-esteem, self-disclosure; perception of others, diversity/intercultural encounters; stereotyping, bias, discrimination.
  3. Active listening as an integral part of information exchange and meaning transfer.
  4. Verbal language and non-verbal cues in communication.
  5. Relationship development & maintenance: opportunities and challenges, including conflict management.
