Description

Student completes 90 hours of field experience in an approved early childhood setting. Under the direct supervision of a qualified early childhood professional, student takes on the role of lead teacher to demonstrate skills in curriculum planning and implementation, child guidance, environmental design, and communication with families and program staff. Students will participate weekly in online discussion with peers and instructor to discuss practicum experiences. Completion of a professional portfolio.

Course Learning Outcomes

Interact with young children through a base of knowledge of child development.

Plan and implement curriculum and activities that are developmentally appropriate and meet the diverse needs of the individual children in the program.

Create a developmentally supportive environment for a diverse range of children.

Design an integrated approach to curriculum that includes literacy, arts, movement, math and science throughout the daily program.

Follow health, safety and nutritional guidelines as established by state licensing and/or program standards.

Guide young children in managing their own social behavior and support positive self-esteem.

Demonstrate the strategies necessary to welcome, involve, and communicate with families, community, and program staff.

Reflect upon their knowledge and experience in early childhood education through the development of a professional portfolio

Learn the main elements to be included in a professional portfolio.

Communicate their personal philosophy in early childhood education.

Evaluate their work samples from individual courses and field experiences.
