Description

Make fundamental connections among various Social Studies topics including civics, geography, economics, history, and global issues at the local, state, national, and global levels. Develop lessons using a holistic approach to teaching Social Studies integrating the Since Time Immemorial curriculum, multicultural literature, and community resources.

Prerequisites

Admission into the BAS-Teaching program; minimum 2.0 on all previous 300-level ECED and EDUC courses.

Course Learning Outcomes

Develop questions and plan social studies investigations using disciplinary and interdisciplinary concepts and tools.

Develop a framework for thoughtful and reflective participatory citizenship and civic decision-making by applying an understanding of local (mayors, city councils, and school boards), state, and national government, law, and politics.

Explain economic concepts and systems, and the interactions among the economy and individuals, households, businesses, governments, and societies.

Explain how geographic features and human cultures shape and impact environments.

Analyze how neighborhoods, communities, and societies have changed over time.

Evaluate sources, integrate multiple perspectives, and use evidence to understand social phenomena.

Create a mini unit plan using the content knowledge learned in this course and the state standards.
