Description

Develop a deep understanding of the purpose of mathematical discourse, how students learn math, and the development of mathematical learning across all strands (number & operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis & probability) for students from birth to grade 8. Create and deliver standards-aligned math lessons and assessments for birth to grade 8 students.

Prerequisites

Admission into the BAS-Teaching Program and minimum 2.0 on all previous 300-level ECED and EDUC courses.

Course Learning Outcomes

Research and examine the complexities of the nature of mathematics, how mathematics should be taught, and how students learn mathematics.

Define the role of the teacher in facilitating mathematical discourse during mathematics instruction and core content instruction.

Plan and deliver developmentally appropriate and differentiated instruction for culturally, linguistically, and ability diverse students using research-based approaches and previously mastered problem-solving skills in the mathematical content areas of numbers and operations, geometry, algebra, data analysis and probability, and measurement.

Plan and deliver problem-based mathematics lessons that include elements of differentiation, assessment, and technology, and require students to engage in sense making and mathematical communication while adhering to state and national standards.

Develop assessments that provide insight into student thinking about mathematics content and create plans to implement adjustments from the results.

Observe and analyze approaches to teaching mathematics including student discourse, student tasks, assessment, and classroom environment.
