Description

This course introduces students to the ductless and variable refrigerant flow (VRF) heat pump market with a review of energy consumption in residential and small commercial applications. The basic operation and servicing of a ductless heat pump is covered including the cooling, heating, and defrost modes. The various types of heat pump systems by various manufacturers including Daikin, Bosch, Mr. Cool and Mitsubishi are then reviewed with a focus on the advantages and disadvantages of each type of system. Students will learn to interpret installation and service data. The performance parameters, such as heating season performance factor (HSPF), seasonal energy efficiency rating (SEER), energy efficiency rating (EER), and the coefficient of performance (COP), are used to evaluate heat pump performance.
