Description

Provides a combination of the theoretical background and technical aspects needed to lead and manage groups in a winter environment. Topics include navigation with map and compass; avalanche awareness and assessment and risk-management. Lecture and experiential place-based learning will familiarize students with local winter environments and recreational opportunities.

Describe and plan for the potential risks inherent in winter outdoor recreation.

Understand basic winter ecology in North Central Washington.

Demonstrate how to read a topographic map and utilize map and compass while route-finding in a winter environment.

Implement Leave No Trace travel and camping ethics specific to the winter environment.

Utilize an understanding of thermoregulation to dress appropriately for winter outdoor recreation.

Explain the signs & symptoms of hypothermia & frostbite and the techniques for preventing and/or treating these cold injuries.

Identify potential Avalanche terrain, triggers and unstable snow conditions.
