Description

Introduction to the most fundamental elements of Latin with equal emphasis on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. The classical pronunciation will be used in class, although Italian (liturgical) pronunciation can be given attention at the student's request.

  1. Completion of chapters 1-8 of Ørberg’s (a) Pars I: Familia Romana, (b) Exercitia Latina I, (c.) Latine Disco: Student’s Manual, and (d) Grammatica Latina.
  2. Reading, writing, speaking, and composition skills within the limits of the grammar covered.
  3. Completion of Vita Nostra I, chapters I and II.

 

  • Week One: Syllabus & introduction; basic phrases and greetings; pronunciation; describing things in classroom. Latine Disco, Introduction. Familia Romana, Exercitia I, and Latine Disco, chapter I. Memorize Grammatica Latina 1 (parts of speech).
  • Week Two: Familia Romana, Exercitia I, and Latine Disco, chapter II. Memorize Grammatica Latina 2 (gender, number case, stems and endings, the five declensions).
  • Week Three: Familia Romana, Exercitia I, and Latine Disco, chapter III. Memorize Grammatica Latina 3 (first-declension nouns).
  • Week Four: Vita Nostra I, chapter I (talking about our homes).
    First cumulative test: Familia Romana and Latine Disco, intro. through chapter III; Grammatica Latina 1-3; Vita Nostra, ch. I.
  • Week Five: Familia Romana, Exercitia I, and Latine Disco, chapter IV. Memorize Grammatica Latina 4 (second-declension nouns).
  • Week Six: Familia Romana, Exercitia I, and Latine Disco, chapter V. Memorize Grammatica Latina 5 (most third-declension nouns).
  • Week Seven: Familia Romana, Exercitia I, and Latine Disco, chapter VI. Memorize Grammatica Latina 6 (i-stemmed third-declension nouns).
  • Week Eight: Vita Nostra I, chapter II (domestic activities).
    Second cumulative test: Familia Romana and Latin Disco, intro. through chapter VI; Grammatica Latina 1-6; Vita Nostra, ch. II.
  • Week Nine: Familia Romana, Exercitia I, and Latine Disco, chapter VII. Memorize Grammatica Latina 7 (fourth declension nouns).
  • Week Ten: Familia Romana, Exercitia I, and Latine Disco, chapter VIII. Memorize Grammatica Latina 8 (fifth declension nouns).
  • Week Eleven: Review.
