Description

A course focused on operation of manual machine tools utilizing modern machine theory. The course introduces metallurgy, heat treatment of materials, and material testing. The students will practice to competency standard operations on manual milling machines, lathes, and surface grinders. Power feeds, digital readouts, indexing equipment and trigonometry also utilized.

Course Learning Outcomes

Safely operate manual mill, lathes, and surface grinders through standard procedures.

Maintain accuracy on chip-making equipment within +-.005

Maintain accuracy on grinding equipment within +-.0005

Navigate and decipher right angle trigonometry and algebra equations with regards to machining operations

Calculate and implement applicable speeds, feeds, and depths of cut on manual machines in accordance with machine theory.

Demonstrate use of indexing equipment, as well as broaching and secondary operations.

Demonstrate the steel hardening process from material selection, through heat treatment, testing, and finish grinding.
