Description

Second of three elementary education math courses. Topics include properties of two/three dimensional figures, measurement, angles, area, perimeter, volume, surface area, constructions, similarity/congruence, Pythagorean Theorem, trigonometry, and transformations. Emphasizes mathematically precise language, problem solving, communication of mathematical ideas, analysis of difficulties in teaching/learning, and other math/educational topics for Pre-K-8.

Prerequisites

MATH& 171 with a grade of “C” (2.0) or better. Recommended: grade of “C” (2.0) or higher for ENGL 097 or equivalent. MATH& 171, MATH& 172, MATH& 173 can be taken out of order with instructor permission.

Course Learning Outcomes

Identify and classify two dimensional geometrical shapes.

Compute angle measures, perimeter and area for two dimensional shapes; volume and surface area for three-dimensional shapes.

Apply concepts of congruence and similarity to the construction of various two-dimensional figures.

Compute and apply trigonometric ratios/functions for right triangles.

Compute measures using the pythagorean theorem.

Compute linear distances on a coordinate plane

Transform geometrical shapes with translations, rotations and reflections.

Identify and create tessellations.

Identify and apply appropriate strategies to solve mathematical problems and real-world applications.

Prove properties related to similarity and congruence

Apply the concepts of this class to Pre-K – 8 Common Core math standards.
