Description

Students will learn the theory of phlebotomy and how it relates to the healthcare delivery system, lab safety and infection control, anatomy and physiology, specimen collection and handling, phlebotomy equipment, quality assurance and control, communication and legal issues.

Name types of communication used in a healthcare setting and discuss issues related to communication.

Describe different laboratory safety concerns and how they are addressed.

Identify phlebotomy equipment and relate the features and application of each to given situations.

Describe human anatomy as it relates to phlebotomy.

Outline the steps taken before, during and after a phlebotomy procedure on adults, children and infants.

Give examples of types of specimen collections and special phlebotomy procedures, and identify key elements of each.

Identify complications encountered in phlebotomy and explain how to deal with them.

Detail specimen ordering, handling and transport practices.
