Description

Humanities option for the music or non-music major. Lectures, readings, recordings, video presentations, guest artists and live concert attendance with emphasis on guiding students to musical understanding and appreciation of the musical styles and forms of western music from the Middle Ages through the 20th century.

Define basic musical concepts; elements of music, components and articulation of style.

Define and describe various categories of musical instruments found in Western Eauropean music.

Define various form structures of the Middle Ages to 20th century.

Perceive the chronological development of music history as it relates to the performing arts.

Listen intelligently and sensitively to a variety of musical styles, renaissance to 20th century.

Examine, define and identify the style components and characteristics of the respective musical periods from the Middle Ages through the 20th Century. These components include the respective historical and literary trends and influences of each period, major composers and major works of each period and the major forms of each period.
