Description
An introductory course focusing on safe operation of machine tools and precision measurement. Students will learn benchwork skills using hand tools. Students will learn how to operate band saws and a drill press. The course will introduce off-hand grinding as well as manual lathe and manual mill machines.

- Accurate measurement using equipment such as calipers, rules, and micrometers
- Basic benchwork skills including use of hand tools such as hack saw, file, drill, metal cutting, and shaping tools
- Use of vertical and horizontal bandsaws to calculate blade pitch depth for various materials and select blade speed
- Off-hand grinding skills such as sharpening drill bits and understanding basic cutter geometry
- Operation of a drill press and the ability to calculate the spindle speed to drill, ream, tap, counterbore, and countersink
- Introduction to manual lathes and manual milling machines
