Description

A survey in mathematical topics focusing on topics such as growth, finance and statistics that are essential knowledge for an educated citizen. Students will build confidence in mathematical reasoning relevant to a wide range of liberal arts and humanities applications.

Prerequisites

MATH 99 with a grade of "C" (2.0) or better, or a grade of 3 or higher on the Smarter Balanced exam, "C" (2.0) or better in high school Algebra, Precalculus or Calculus within past three years or appropriate placement score.

Course Learning Outcomes

Core Topics

 

  1. Proportional reasoning (could be covered by topics such as exponential growth and decay, similar triangles, etc.)
  2. Symbolic logic, including analyzing arguments
  3. Basic counting and probability, including conditional probability. Use probability to make informed decisions.
  4. Descriptive statistics and regression modeling.
  5. Linear and exponential growth and decay models.
  6. Personal finance, including future value, present value, compound interest, annuities and loans.
  7. Problem solving
  8. Additional topics may include but are not limited to: set theory, geometry, advanced counting techniques, and math history.
