A non-music major humanities course designed to trace the development of jazz from its roots to its contemporary modern styles.

Course Learning Outcomes

Develop critical listening skills through directed listening assignments and classroom discussion of specific elements of jazz performance and recordings

Recognize the historical genre of specific styles within jazz, and to trace the development of each, relating them to previous musical styles

Understand the influence of major personalities as they appear in development of various styles.<br>
Trace the development of jazz styles through relevant historical events in the U.S. and abroad

Define basic musical concepts; elements of music, components and articulation of style
