Description

Survey of native plants of the Okanogan and their cultural, medicinal, and ecological importance to the First People and ecosystems of the Plateau Region.

Course Learning Outcomes

Have a broad understanding of ethnobotany of the Salish-speaking people of the Columbia Basin as well as elsewhere in the world.

Have an appreciation of the diversity and complexity of plant life.

Explain how native plants and their natural products are/were used by the First People.

Have an appreciation of the aesthetic value and ecological importance of plants to the existence of all organisms.

Have an appreciation of the diversity of the Pacific Northwest native culture and their use of plants.

Know what interdisciplinary science is and have a brief introduction to scientific disciplines related to ethnobotany. Have a basic understanding of the scientific methods used to study ethnobotany.
