Description

Intersection of social institutions and women in American society. Explores research and formal theories on social and institutional pressures that shape women and their roles; confronts myths, misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding a woman's life, including her history, education, sexuality, politics, economics, religion, family, race, age, self-identity and potential.

Course Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate an understanding of the sociological perspective including theoretical perspectives and key sociological principles.

Analyze, evaluate, assess, and effectively communicate (orally and in writing) the reciprocal relationship between the individual and society and employ the sociological imagination to evaluate the role of women in society.

Employ the Sociological Imagination using it as insight into the sociological differences among women and the effects of these differences on individuals and society, both in the U.S. and globally.

Know women’s historical participation and the nature of their role in American society.

Use analytical and critical skills necessary to be informed observers.
