Description

Continuation of ASL&122. Further development of conversational skills, including grammar and deaf culture information. Communicative proficiency is the main objective of the sequence. Successful completion would prepare the student to enter the second-year sequence of ASL classes.

Course Learning Outcomes

Successfully handle a variety of uncomplicated, basic and communicative tasks and social situations in a culturally acceptable manner.

Ask and answer questions and participate in simple conversations at the Intermediate-Mid level (ACTFL guidelines) on such topics as: giving directions, describing others, making requests about family and occupations in depth, attributing qualities to others, talking about routines, and maintaining and interrupting conversations at appropriate times.

Develop ability to apply fundamental signing concepts to receptive and expressive signing tasks including visual/spatial orientation, classifiers, spatial referencing, role shifting, non-manual behaviors (facial expression, facial grammar, body movements), and syntax/word order.

Act with respect and better understanding of Deaf people and ASL, with an appreciation for their linguistic and cultural diversity.

Core Topics

Identify & describe people and places. Make requests, ask for advice and give opinions.
Understand the use of parameters, grammatical structures, non-manuals signals, temporal aspect and cultural awareness for the purpose of successful communication in ASL.
Develop ASL vocabulary, fingerspelling, number, and storytelling/narrative skills.
Understand, identify and utilize Classifiers in signed dialog and stories.
