Description

Introduction to the field of special education. Includes various categories of disabilities and special needs, legal and historical perspectives for special education services, roles and responsibilities of special education team members, and instructional strategies for teaching in a special education environment. (Covers the 14 core competencies for special education paraeducators.)

Course Learning Outcomes

Understand the typical human development from birth through 21 years and milestones typically achieved at different ages.

Describe risk factors that may prohibit or impede typical development.

Identify the legal issues related to the education of children and youth with disabilities and their families.

Communicate the value of providing instructional and direct services to children and youth with special needs.

Interpret various historical and legislative influences on special education through IDEA, Section 504 and ADA.

Understand the roles and responsibilities of all members of the special education multidisciplinary team.

Recognize and respect the influence families and culture have on children and their learning and development.

Implement positive behavioral guidance techniques and prevention/intervention strategies.

Describe characteristics, assessment, and effective instructional strategies for a wide range of disability categories.

Motivate and assist children and youth with disabilities by using appropriate materials and effective reinforcement strategies.

Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct, including the requirements of confidentiality.

Develop effective instructional methods and materials, including assistive communication and technology equipment to support children and youth with disabilities.
