Description

Topics include solving linear, quadratic (by factoring) and rational equations; solving a linear system of equations; manipulating polynomials (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing); and using exponent properties to simplify expressions. Students will also graph linear equations in two variables, calculate slopes, and find linear functions.

MATH 93 or higher with a grade of C (2.0) or better, ABE 41 with a B- (2.7) or better, or appropriate placement recommendation

Course Learning Outcomes

Solve equations of the following types: linear, quadratic (by factoring), rational.

Solve a 2 X 2 system of linear equations analytically and graphically.

Set up and solve word problems for linear, quadratic and rational equations.

Set up and solve word problems for a 2X2 system of linear equations.

Graph linear equations.

Find the equation of a line given two points, a point and a slope, and/or the graph of a line.

Find the equation of a line from information given in a word problem.

Add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomials.

Factor polynomials.

Add, subtract, multiply and divide rational expressions.

Use unit analysis to solve word problems.

Convert between decimal and scientific notation.

Multiply and divide numbers written in scientific notation.

Use exponent properties through negative exponents to simplify expressions.

Continue on into the next appropriate course.
