Core Topics

Continuation of skills and techniques learned in Art 150 including the following:
1. Handbuilding techniques, including pinch, coil and slab methods.
2. Wheel throwing techniques, including functional and non-functional ware, thrown and altered forms, various sizes and shapes, lid making, trimming.
3. Firing techniques, including bisque, Raku, high-fire, low-fire.
4. Surface decoration, including underglaze, glaze, surface texture, smoke firing.
5. Materials and methods, including making clay and glazes.
6. Exploration of the history of ceramics in various cultures.
Students will have increased responsibility for the direction of their own work. Degree of skill and complexity increase.
Further exploration into historical context of world ceramics.
